Trail No. 1: The Svenningen plateau

A walk up to the Svenning plateau combines a stunning panoramic view with a close look at gunnery positions and bunkers built during the Nazi German occupation. With headlamps you can explore these distinctive bunkers. The plateau, one of the highest points on Støtt, has a magnificent panorama of the jagged peaks of the Lofoten Islands to the north, Helgeland’s coast and myriad of islands to the south, and the Vestfjord in between. Despite the name, this is not a fjord but a stretch of open sea.

Bring your camera, as there are many great photo opportunities. This is a nesting area for sea eagles, and there is a good chance you’ll see the largest winged predator in Northern Europe.

Start your walk on the steamship quay, or at Støtt Brygge, and proceed over the jetty and up to Svenningen. On this plateau follow the road northwards, turning left near the road’s end; there the old German road ascends to the northern plateau and the wartime bunkers. We recommend that you return by walking back over the ridge and use the descent to the south. Moloveien road takes you back where you started.

Duration: 2–2.5 hours.
Bring good footwear.

This walk, which circles the island of Indre Støtt, is quite scenic, lets you experience its birds and other wildlife. As you approach the southern tip, there is a lovely beach, barbecue facilities and a lean-to shelter. This archipelago is large and quite varied.

Start your walk on the steamship quay, or at Støtt Brygge, and proceed across the bridge to Indre Støtt. If you wish to head for the beach immediately, take the first right after the chapel, heading down Tjuvdalen valley to the shore. There is also a “fitness-programme checkpoint” here.

Then head northwards past Gavelen. Eventually you see the islands of Gåsvær and Meløya to the east. When you hit the main road you can follow it back.

You can also take this walk in the opposite direction. You then simply follow the main road to the end, and then head south onto the beach.
