Skjelåtinden Summit – on the top of Nordland
Stand on top of the Skjelåtinden summit and experience possibly the greatest view in the whole Nordland region!
Skjelåtinden is a mighty mountain located in truly magic surroundings in the area between Meløy and Beiarn municipalities. With its 1637 meters above sea level, the summit is one of the highest points between Mo i Rana and Bodø and dominates the Western borders of the Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park.
From the top of Skjelåtinden you can admire a fantastic panoramic view worthy of the kingdom of adventures that lies beneath us. We can see the Okstindan summit in the Sounth, Sweden in the East, much of the Svartisen glacier, the vast valleys of the Beiarn region, the plateau landscape of Saltfjellet mountains, the Láhko National Park and even the mighty wall of Lofoten Islands in the North-West, if the weather is clear. If we are lucky, we can also see large herds of reindeers in the valleys.
Because of the distances and the mountains, we take a shuttle boat from the dam at the Storglomvatn lake and into Glomdalen. This way, we save nearly 20 km of walk and we will be able to make the whole trip in one day. Return boat on the way back from Skjelåtinden is included in the price.
We meet up at the dam by the Storglomvatn lake, put on life jackets and go onboard the boat. We leave the boat near the river mouth in Glomdalen, approximately 600 meters above sea level. We put on our backpacks and enter a stunning valley dominated by the stunning view of Glomåga and the peaks of northern and southern part of Glomvass mountains on each side. Halfway through the valley, we pass the border of the Saltfjellet-Svartisen National Park and enter Norway’s second largest national park (2102 square kilometers). At 800 meters of altitude, the landscape opens up and we enter the point sharing the three valleys Glomdalen, Sørdalen and Gråtådalen. Straight in front of us, we have the perfect view of Skjelåtinden and the neighbouring Spidstinden peak, while to the South we can see the Eastern part of Svartisen. We find a suitable resting place where we eat lunch, admire the rock formations and discuss the way to the top. By now, only 800 meters separates us from our goal. The terrain rises steadily until we are about 100 meters from the top. There, the terrain gets a little steeper and dominated by gravel. Luckily, we do not have to climb and climb, we can still move slowly and at a controlled pace. After not that long climb, we reach the flat top of Skjelåtinden and get rewarded with probably the best panoramic view in the whole region. We plant the flag in the beacon and enjoy the moment. Pats on the back are more than recommended! The view is absolutely fantastic. We fill the memory chip of the camera to capture the moment and memorize the laugh and smiles that make this moment unique. Eventually, we head downhill, back to the Storglomvatn lake and the boat that is waiting for us. Once we reach the meeting point by the dam on the other side of the lake, our trip ends.
At Beyondlimits, we always focus on safety during our trips. The trip doesn’t have any permanent trail, so we use experienced and knowledgeable local guides on the trip. We provide first aid kit, navigational aids, and safety equipment. During the trip there is no cellphone coverage, but we bring emergency beacon, and device for communication.
